Stinson Community Association Meeting Minutes

o Jennifer shared the Crime Statistics for the Stinson Neighbourhood
i. See attached for stats
o Share any safety/crime concerns with the exec and they will share this with Jennifer
o Dave reiterated that the stats only reflect what is reported so please report ANY crimes you see
- Treasurers Update provided by Tina
- Winterfest Update
o December 21st – 4-8pm at Corktown and then a procession along the railtrail
o Approval of the event has been achieved
o Christina – flyers were passed out
o Discussion was had regarding how to get youth and community involvement in the event
7. Guest: Central Memorial Recreation Centre
o Rec coordinator for Central gave a program update. After school gym (15 kids every single day).
Tuesdays are now opened up for programming. Attendance is growing. 28 teens on Friday night – thanks to YOW workers. Satisfaction survey showed that Central was in the top 3! Flooring and paint was updated last month.
o Zero tolerance policy – patrons and renters are held to a zero tolerance policy regarding anything violent/aggressive (verbal and physical) and consumption of alcohol/drugs. Consequences can include suspensions or bans.
o Dave had questions about patronage numbers and Sam was able to answer his questions. 8. Stinson Neighbourhood Action Plan Update from Sunil
o Asked for participation for presentation to council (speaking not required) • December 11th

o KarlprovidedanupdatethatbasedonacaseinfrontoftheONB,Stinsoncouldbemovedfrom Ward 2 to Ward 3 – although that is unlikely. The main difference if that was to happen is that the Councillor would be different.

i. Hamilton Community Benefits Network – someone (other than Karl) will need to sit as a neighbourhood representative. The HCBN helps with providing a community voice to metrolinx in regards to LRT or any major transportation decisions within the city.
ii.Family Friendly Neighbourhood Policy – comes out of Beasley from their struggle with a development company.
14. Community Garden Canada 150 Art Submission
o 2 2×2 pieces of art that will go on an arch in the community garden – protected by plexiglass o 5 artist renditions were submitted
o The 5 submissions were displayed for view
o An online vote was proposed – with the result being
- 2 week deadline – Sunil to distribute the survey
- Motion brought by Karl – seconded by Christina

15. Small Grants
o Some in the pipeline were reviewed so as to be voted on in December
- Mail out – some type of printed material sent to all Stinson residents. The SNAP pamphlet outlining the SCA and what it is to go to every resident of Stinson through Canada Post.
- FREE T-shirts and buttons – distributed at community events as a means to build the Stinson brand.
- WinterfestSolsticeEvent-ChristinasharedthatBenwantstolighttheunderpasses along the rail trail and requesting to rent lighting equipment as a means to beautify the space and bring attention to the infrastructure that already exists there.
o Call for people to help review grants before the next meeting – Ben & Matt
o Reminder that 3 people need to be involved in the small grants process
o REMINDER – there is still money left in the small grants fund so please think about any projects
you could use support for by the end of the year 16. Update from the Neighbourhood Leadership Institute
o Shahad shared that there is a FREE 10 week leadership training program that is looking for candidates (ages 16+). February -June on Saturdays (10AM – 3PM) with lunch, bus tickets and child-care provided
o Eligible for a general course credit from Mohawk at the end
o $500 grant from HCF available
o Application is due mid-January
o Tina talked about the project (Hamilton Organization of Empowered Sex-workers (HOES)) that
she developed through this program and her experience 17. City School by Mohawk – Cat Maracle
o Program that offers free college credits through courses and workshops and are a means for people to try college for free
o They have expanded to a trades lab
o Speaker Series – Indigenous Resilience (in partnership with the Native Womens’ Centre)

o Community Dinner – Wednesday 15, 2017 at Mission Services, 196 Wentworth St N
18. Locations for the Kiosk
o 3 poster kiosks that are ready and waiting to be deployed
o Voting was completed through placing stickies where the kiosks should go on a map o This feedback will be provided to Jason Farr
19. Code of Conduct and Restorative Justice (RJ)
o Reminders for appropriate conduct has been added to the bottom of the agenda o RJ is an approach to mediate conflict – as opposed to a punitive approach
- This is taking place and is open to all SCA members
- November 28th in the evening with time and date to be confirmed
