Meeting Minutes

Land Acknowledgment: We want to recognize and acknowledge that we meet on the traditional territories of the Mississauga of the Credit River and the Six Nations Haudenosaunee and within the lands protected by the Dish with One Spoon wampum agreement

Present: Matt Grande, Karl Andrus, Tina Dort, Grant Bingelman, Tim Button, Emily, Courtney, Dave Michal, Erika Morton, Margaret Bennett, Nicole Walter , Eleni Jalbout, Tarek Jalbout, Ralph, Ben, Rosanne Paparo, Willow Watson, Sunil Angrish (Stinson’s Community Developer, Social Planning and Research Council), Melanie Pothier (Neighbourhood Action Evaluation), Lorraine ValMadrid (Hamilton Community Foundation), Councillor Jason Farr (Ward 2 Councillor, City of Hamilton)
1. Welcome, Indigenous Land Acknowledgement, Review of Values, Mission and Vision, Introductions
- Matt provided a welcome, review of land acknowledgment, review of values, mission and vision and started introductions
2. Stinson Terms of Reference Review
- Sunil facilitated the discussion on the annual review of the Terms of Reference.
- Sunil provided an overall review of the Terms of Reference with the membership and then focused on reviewing the changes that were suggested through feedback opportunities (online and via invitation to a meeting that was held)
- A couple members had comments regarding the suggested changes, mainly pertaining to the suggestions about changes to executive member terms
- Sunil suggested holding separate votes regarding items in the Terms of Reference that had suggestions for changes, followed by a separate vote for the approving on the entire document. There were 2 votes held for the Terms of Reference, one to address changes to the Terms regarding terms for executive members and a second for approving the entire document
- First vote held resulted in 7 members approved the suggested changes, 4 opposed and 1 person abstained. Karl identified that there quorum was not reached for this vote and that this vote does not pass
- Second vote for approving the overall Terms of References had 12 members approved the document
3. Guest: Jocelyn Strutt, Community Representative’s to Speak to 5 Year Report of the Neighbourhood Action Strategy
- Neighbourhood Action Strategy report to council happening soon
- Annual report is typically the focus for this annual meeting, however, this year will be reflection of the last 5 years
- Would like to invite one or two members of the SCA to share what their involvement with the neighbourhood has meant as an individual or as a community. Responding to the question: What has it meant over the past 5 years to participate with the SCA?
- November 6th will host the meeting at 4 PM at City Hall in Council Chambers
- Food, childcare and transportation will be provided
- Volunteers from the community are invited to speak and also to attend. The 1 or 2 volunteers will be able to have 5 minutes to speak
- Focus of this council meeting is on the Neighbourhood Action Strategy
- At this meeting, there will be an update on the Reimagine project
- Will discuss as a community association to determine the 1 or 2 volunteer speakers. A SCA rep will follow up with Jocelyn to confirm the volunteer speakers and next steps
4. Stinson Executive Elections
- Dave facilitated the voting process, calling upon persons to be nominated in the position of one co-chair (Matt stepped down from his 2nd year), secretary and treasurer
- Acclaimed in – Tina Dort as treasurer and Nicole Walter as secretary
- Karl will maintain his role as co-chair and complete his second year of his term. As no one stood for co-chair, Matt will stay in the role on an interim basis, ideally until another member is voted in for the second co-chair role
- New executive members were congratulated on their new role with the SCA
5. Stinson Action Team/Committee/Project Updates
- Events – no updates
- Stinzine – working on the next issue
- Slow Down Snail Mural – no updates
- Community Garden-Canada 150 Art Submissions- next meeting will be voting on the art submissions
- PlanLocal – no updates
6. Updates from Councillor Jason Farr
- Building to start on 367 Charlton development
- Street work happening along Stinson as per PlanLocal
- Eguardo and Dave – Winter solstice festival on the Rail Trail festival of lights stay tuned!
- Will circulate the Endorsement policy to be submitted for review at the next SCA meeting
- Citizen Jane tickets-give away two tickets to the documentary Citizen Jane on Saturday Oct 14th. If anyone is interested contact Lorraine.
