- Welcome, Review of Values, Mission and Vision, Introductions (7:08 – 7:15 pm)
- Attendance: Matt Grande, Tina Dort, Daryl (City of Hamilton), Sunil (SPRC), Mike Dobson, Margaret Bennett, Jean-Jacques Somwe, Tim, Dave Michal, Julie Michal (Community Safety Initiative), Ben Babcock, Christina Babcock, Matt ?, Al Huzinga, Steve (City of Hamilton), Miranda (Mohawk College), Shruti (NES), Karl Andrus, Constanza Duran, Adam (Change Camp from McMaster).
- Matt welcomed. Dave read the Values, Mission, and Vision. Members introduced themselves with what they are looking forward to this summer.
- Guest: City of Hamilton – Bike Lanes in Stinson, Darryl Bender-Cycling Manager (Matt – 7:16 – 7:37)
- Resurfacing accelerated through the participatory budget process. Want to hear resident feedback. Bike box will be added at Stinson and Wentworth.
- Christina questioned if re-painting would be involved at stop signs. Darryl confirmed this would happen.
- Matt raised concern about Stinson and Emerald to increase pedestrian safety. Also questioned if bike lane could be connected with Hunter lanes. Darryl noted that it is possible this would be addressed through the Claremont Detail Design process that is happening this summer. A two-way facility may be considered on Hunter east of Liberty.
- Dave raised concern of cars parked in bike lanes. Al extended this to question whether divided bike lanes are possible. Darryl said that because it’s lower volumes on Stinson, it may not be assessed as appropriate as well as maintenance. Al pushed to understand whether we can learn from other streets where divided bike lanes have been implemented. Karl then raised the question of the increased traffic flow that is anticipated with LRT design. City traffic flows show Stinson being a diversion route. Dave suggested a double-wide bike lane from community centre to Stinson School because fewer people are making south turns off Stinson. Darryl said in general feel better putting two-way bike on one-way streets for collision/safety mitigation.
- Ben asked if there are mechanisms with bike lanes that can help with traffic calming. Darryl said that he would raise this with the traffic. Residents identified Erie and Stinson as a concern as well as the stretch from Erie to Victoria because there is no intermediary stop sign.
- Dave – Question was raised if lanes could be painted green. Darryl said they prefer to reserve green for “safety” points. Dave Asked if we could have people to count bikes and stopped cars to see how we could test this out. Darryl said that we now paint bike lanes with plastic as it increases durability v. paint. Members encouraged by this.

- Guest: Julie Michal – Community Safety Research Project (Karl – 7:40 – 7:55 pm)
- Group looked at how we can make community safety more holistic. Started about 3 years ago. Group has now evolved and working with McMaster. McMaster research looked at community safety issues on holistic level and on a micro-macro level. Original study can be found on Macsphere. Focused on several key areas. Findings and suggestions available in the report. Information in report can be applied to Stinson if we want general information and review.
- Some residents raised specific concerns and suggestion that a safety audit needs to be done in the neighbourhood. Julie said doing a short-term and long-term solution assessment.
- Also noted that vacant tax rebate progress is being reviewed. Missed window for community feedback sessions on options for revising before report released. June 7 is last time community can come back with feedback to affect the report. If people are interested, they can reach out to get involved.

- Forestry – presentation from Steve who is part of forestry management (7:52-8:09)
- Tree inventory programme is in year 2. Figuring out what species are present in Hamilton to help with canopy management. Grid Programme does rotational maintenance city-wide. Manages to reach each tree every 5.5 years, where industry standard is 7 years. Street tree replacement programme is available. For every ash tree that goes down, plant another tree. Also trying to incentivize residents to accept trees. Identified lower-wards as opportunity to increase canopy cover.
- Christina – Question raised about mulberry trees being cut down in the neighbourhood. Is there thought to having fruit-trees replace them? Steve said not at this time due to but can be advocated for. Ben and Al asked what rights “custodians” have in process of tree removal if neighbours complain citing example of resident who had a tree on their property cut down because a neighbour didn’t like it. Case was investigated only with complainants, not with person who cared for/watered the healthy tree. Also asked for confirmation that trees not cut-down unless a risk abatement. Steve replied that decision would be left to the investigator. He will investigate occurrence to understand why process may not have been followed in terms of consulting with custodian.
