Meeting Minutes for February 14, 2013
Attendees: Ben Babcock, Christina Babcock, Elisabeth Brown, Maggie Day-Myron, Joanna Millions, Natasha Murphy, Mike Montrieul, Erika Morton, Greg Reader.
Guests: Suzanne Brown (City Neighbourhood Planning), Rebecca Doll (Community Development Worker), Lisa S (City of Hamilton)
Brian Goodman Chaired the meeting. There was a read over of the Agenda. Minutes of last meeting were passed. The Treasurer had no news to report.
Isabelle Dobronyl was scheduled to attend and speak about the Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University in partnership with the RBG. Isabelle was unable to attend and will be invited back.
Casino Survey Results from the online poll that was sent out was reviewed. Results will be available on the website. Rebecca shared that the City Consolers voted to defer the final decision pending further review.
Participatory Budgeting – Brian Goodman reviewed the process and explained that the committee for ward 2 is currently working on the process and with Con. Farr towards. Currently two representative from Stinson are a part of the committee; Joanna Millions is the second representative. Outstanding question is how much of the process will align itself with the current neighbourhood plan.
Waste – after the January meeting Con. Farr informed Stinson Association members that a Representative of the Waste Department would like to come out to a Meeting for a Q&A. Members and Neighbours were asked to email concerns, issues and such to [email protected] This is further to last month’s comments concerning waste pick up, etc.
Implementation Committee Updates
Goal A –Chair Elisabeth Brown – Most recent meeting was attended by 3 guests from city. The visioning for this group encompasses Central Memorial Recreation Center, Carter Park as a Hub for the Stinson Community. The Mural was discussed and given the recent bridge repairs will be painted on a series of removable panels and stored until the repair work is complete. Community Center to be developed in time and a feasibility study is under way for the East side of the property. No time line was given for the completion of the study at this time. A focus group was conducted to assist with the visioning call to artists (mural in the park by the basketball court). A landscape Architect with the city shared feedback with the community and will review the overall concept. 2 drawings will be reviewed as part of Group A’s next meeting. The next meeting will also review the Clairemount Access Bridge/Tunnel which is slated for bridge work in 2014.
Goal B – Mike Montreuil as spokesperson reviewed the groups communication plans. Priorities identified by the group is Logo which leads to future community branding. The website and online communications, and community volunteering. A submission for logo’s will be posted online and on face book. In person submission are possible. Next steps will review the website, and event communication.
Goal C – Spokesperson Christina Babcock mentioned currently the group is working on the alleyways. The group will be meeting on Sunday Feb. 17th 2013 to walk the alleyways and identify concerns, strengths and possible sustainable green alleyways.
Goal E & G – Chair Joanna Millions spoke about how their group is looking to improve walk ability and beautify in the Stinson Neighbourhood. Areas of concern The Victoria Access where kids and adults are cutting across the tracks to get to Queen Victoria School. This will have to be co-ordinated through the city and the Rail Line owners as CN Rail has ownership over portions of the bridge. Bridge work is also pending in this area as well. Victoria and Young Chain link fence is to be repaired. This group is looking into ways to encourage youth to use existing sage crossings. The city is looking into ways such as yeild signs, or crosswalk at this intersection. This includes MLE (municipal law enforcement) as part of the discussion and solutions. Additional support through education programs, community safety programs were also discussed.
Goal F – Maggie Day-Myron – Group is in the process of putting together a plan to highlight, and catalogue Stinson’s Community Heritage and Rich History.
Goal H – Devon Mordell – was unable to attend and will update us soon on the groups progress.
After the Break Suzanne Brown spoke about Neighbourhood Strategy Initiatives. Lisa S. was introduced and is responsible for syncing all 10 community plan points for progress tracking. Lisa will assist Suzanne to liaison on clarifying points residents identified in their neighbourhood plans to assist with department allocations and resources. Key contacts are still being assigned.
News
Ministry of Training and Universities and the Threshold School of Building, Youth Training and employment introduces Home Renovation training, and Neighbourhood Property Improvement in one program. Home owners will be able to apply and be involved with the program. 20 applicants that apply through unemployment will taught home renovation skills through an approved program and receive applied job training while helping property owners of the Stinson Neighbourhood. Criteria is still being reviewed by the College and the City of Hamilton.
Mohawk College, Rotary Club, and Education Hubs are working on access programs to help kids stay in school and Graduate.
Community Garden- Are being reviewed as part of sustainable green neighbourhoods. The City is current reviewing as there are no current bi-laws to support a neighbourhood farmers market or community veteran modeled gardens
