StinZine Update: We have had two meetings for the Stinzine Mission, Vision, Values. The process has been quite helpful to articulating what we think the Stinzine can be and our relationship as a publication to the SCA, the city, and advertisers. We also received a grant from Neighbourhood Action Strategy to help with printing costs this year. There will be one issue going out this spring in the current format to inform residents of the changes that we are going through and why. The hope is that we can get more people submitting content and participating from the neighbourhood so that the issue reflects the voice of residents and issues that matter to them. Next issue should go out in May and we have surplus funds from last year to pay for printing. If you have content you would like to submit around “What matters to you”, please email me at [email protected]. All of the advertisers from last year have been contacted to tell them of the change in format and most have been very encouraging when they reply.
Ask: If you have content you would like to submit – photo, art, poem, article, on the theme of “What matters to me about where I live”, please send to Margaret.
International Village BIA Update: When we asked Susie for an update this month, she alerted us to some issues with Cannabis Culture at 275 King St E. In her view, they are bringing some crime to our BIA and have taken our logo and used a similar design for their logo. If you look up Hamilton Village Dispensary on Facebook you’ll see what I mean. They also had a molotav cocktail thrown at their storefront a couple weeks ago. Luckily it didn’t have gasoline in it but it seems to have been a threat or warning. It’s been a very concerning issue for our BIA. Susie is currently trying to get police & city support to get this one location closed but not getting much support. There is another marijuana dispensary in the Village BIA and they have been very cooperative and supportive and are not dealing with the same issues the other one is facing. As an anecdote, we have been seeing more graffiti in the neighbourhood so please make sure that you report any graffiti or crime, even if you think it is minor as there is an on-line reporting tool for minor incidents, to the police so that they can track the activity.
If you refer to the events page on their website you can read the letter from the chair regarding the board’s stance on LRT and their role in the project. Susie, the BIA head is on a number of city committees around LRT.
We are hoping to organize a summer tour of the BIA with Susie so that we can hear from here what are some of the highlights and activities they do. We will advise when there are proposed dates for this event.
Save the date for a movie night at Ferguson Station on July 20. Further details will be released in May.
Asks:
- Please report any crimes or graffiti to the police
- Could the executive consider inviting our crime manager who attended the AGM to update us on what is happening with Cannabis Culture.
- Please remember to shop local! My favourite spots are the Thrifty Designer, JH Gordon Books, Studio 205, and Café Oranje.
