SCA meeting, April 2016
Thursday April 14th, 2016 7:00 – 9:00 PM
Central Memorial Recreation Centre – 93 West Ave S
SCA Values: Collaboration, Engagement, Respect, Trust, Inclusiveness, Transparency
SCA Mission: To enable all residents to fully participate in the community. To actively engage community partners in building relationships in order to enrich the community and the neighbourhood. To encourage, build, and preserve a safe, clean, and attractive neighbourhood that we are all proud to call home
SCA Vision: Stinson is a diverse and engaged community with a natural, historic, and vibrant character.
- Actions of SCA meeting survey feedback
- Fewer motions: everyone agrees! Except when there’s a change needed in minutes. Also, can we continue to record attendance in minutes.
- Icebreaker: mixed feeling. Will proceed with “light” ice breakers and check in about them in the future.
- Sit in a circle: add tables in rectangle shape, everyone can see each other, but it still feels like a board room. So add fun micky mouse table cloth to take away feeling.
- What are your thoughts on guest speakers?
2 guest speakers, limit the time, limit updates to only those committees who have updates. Jason Farr a lot of people like when he comes, encourage 3-4 times a year but maybe limit what he talks about.
Bring in: mustard seed, other groups to share projects, update with condos
- Intro, Values, Mission, Vision, & Ice breaker (10m)
What’s your favourite ice cream? Lee (orange creamcicle), Margaret (mint-chocolate chip), Lyna (vanilla bean), Coley (grape), Gary (cherry Garcia), Bruce (won’t answer question), Councillor Farr (gelato coconut), Erika (cherry ice cream), Andrew (anything peanut butter), Tim (bad tooth, so no ice cream), Shawna- Jeb’s Place Rec Therapist (Superkid icecream), Ben (Pralines and cream), Christina (neopolitan), Talia (cherry), Diane (gelato cappuccino), Linda (orange sherbert).
- Revised calendar (Bruce)
- Mural date is needed, *possible* June 11th or after that.
- Ben is doing a Wentworth to Wellington stairs walk and is looking for walk assistants.
- Lyna handed the street safety audit tool.
3.5 Councillor Jason Farr
Upcoming: re-painting bike lanes, more speed bumps, Ward 2 staff patio/signage people- got call from Robin Ellis and they will be going over sign. Wentworth Charlton best is coming soon, hint, you will be happy to say and is coming sooner rather than later.
Questions:
- (Bruce) Got notice in mail someone is looking for exceptions to some of the bylaws to turn houses to apartments and one of the variance is around parking. We already have a parking problem, why are we considering. (C. Farr) It’s their right to go to the committee of adjustments, and you have a right to submit a comment. You can submit comment to Councillor Farr and he will send to the committee. Suggests getting resident to sign on and agree with rejecting.
- (Tim) Harry Stinson doesn’t want the book mobile across from him….
- (Farr) I thought this was resolved.
- (Diane) Is there a repaving of Stinson coming soon?
- (Farr) Eleni is collecting comments and I think there’s a lot of people talking about it. Maybe look into a treatment, etc.
- Update of Stinson Neighbourhood Action Plan (SNAP) (Erika; 15m)
- What is the action plan?
- Plan that was created a few years ago. Action plan created that is resident led, projects in your community to impact your community. It’s been about 4 years, there is a lot that has been done, a lot that hasn’t been done. Team wants to know if we should update the plan.
- Haven’t up dated the plan in a while, and a few other stuff that align with the plan.
- Census data- should we wait.
- How about we use community input questions.
- Output: will review current plan at the next SCA meeting, strike a sub-committee, and use June as launch or maybe Stinson 101 in fall. Erika will send out links to the Stinson Neighbourhood Action Plan
- Sherman Hub has the idea of spokes, people become street ambassadors—door knock, intro, and shared info. Maybe those are the kind of things that I would like to do, and it would bring people’s diversity to the group. If you want people’s input you have to go and get it.
- Coley would be interest in being a part of the outreach committee.
- Small, 2-month update committee
- Highlight our current priorities; Focus on a couple new priorities
- Goal:
- Summarize where we are
- Get feedback
- Turn the feedback into something to give to City Hall as “updated” plan
- To report back at June meeting
- Lyna: Work plan approval (5m)
- Motion to approve. All in favor.
- Cathedral School Pop-Up / McQuesten Urban Farm (Ben; 5m)
- Victory Gardens want to start up in Stinson. Locally grown produce to be brought into the lower city.
- Ben looking for endorsement to have an official food advisor. Lee will send letter to Ben about farmers market.
- Linda asks Ben to look into food certification. City says it can but they just need an inspection.
- Talk about need to renovate this building.
- Committee Updates
- StinZine came out. Yay!
- Coley wants to start a Stinson Spokes program
- Firm up three working groups (Safe Street; Inclusion; Events)
- Will be encouraging each of these three working groups to launch on their own and set up their own meeting times, instead of holding working groups during SCA meeting time.
- Comment that it was helpful to start up working groups during SCA time and to follow that process in the future for when starting up new groups
