Minutes General Meeting
February, 2016
Meeting opened with the reading of the SCA Values, Mission & Vision by Lee
- Erika welcomed everyone and everyone introduced themselves.
- Reviewed the Agenda. Nothing added to agenda; Minutes were approved, moved by Joanna, seconded by Ralph.
- Mural update: Requires a graffiti coating and several days of +10oC. We’ll be having a unveiling event in June or July!

- 100 in 1 Day
- What is it? 100in1Day is a growing global movement that is changing how people interact with their cities. Originating in Bogotá, Colombia in 2012, it has encouraged hundreds of one-day community-based interventions in cities around the world with things like street art, urban gardens, beautification projects, social events, and improvements in city infrastructure all being profiled in a city-wide festival.
- This year’s will take place on Saturday, June 4, 2016.
- 100 in 1 Day
- Hamilton hosted 119 interventions in 2015
- There will be workshops on how to organize an intervention; Details should be revealed soon. Check https://hamilton.100in1day.ca/ for more info!
- Vision Zero
- Vision Zero is a multi-national road traffic safety project that aims to achieve a highway system with no fatalities or serious injuries in road traffic. It started in Sweden and was approved by their parliament in October 1997.
- Was recently ratified by City Council, unanimously
- Examples of tangible steps towards Vision Zero include separated bike lanes, pedestrian protections, lower speed limits, etc.
- Lyna added the idea of doing a Street Audit as part of Jane’s Walk (May 6-8, 2016). She will have a Jane’s Walk update for the March meeting.

- Jason Farr
- Jason answered several questions relating to a wide variety of topics.
- Regarding a pedestrian crossing for the Bruce Trail (near CP Rail line): “we will begin discussions with CP. Dan Lawlor is our Electrical expert and he has agreed to assist us with this. The rumble strips will need a motion should you wish to proceed after full consultation.”
- Regarding Wentworth 2-way conversion: Scheduled for mid-to-late Summer.
- Regarding Speed Bumps on Stinson: Not legally allowed on minor arterial roads (ie, roads with buses); Provincial Traffic Act
- Sidewalk on Victoria Street South: “We will be installing the sidewalk (west side of Victoria from Young to Stinson) later this spring/early summer.”
- LED lighting on Victoria overpass: Additional lighting is coming sometime this Summer.
- Reducing speed limit to 30km/h: We can appeal to council, but probably not until after the pilot project in the North End is done (Dec 2017), plus time to make reports, etc
- Vision Zero: Approved by council to investigate. Staff will be reporting back on feasability
- Dog Park: Green space off the rail trail near Corktown Park. Motion at next public works meeting to approve. Approximately two year timeline until completion. One will be in Central Park (Beasley) following.
- PBW2: There’s a renewal committee for PBW2; Decided to do a theme for this year; the theme is Safe Streets! Formula to address discrepencies in population between the hoods (Durand had 44% of voters in last vote)
- We will get a speed monitoring sign on Stinson
- There will be another speed hump added on Ontario St
- Sacajawea House (Suzanne Swanton & Melanie McCauly, 5m)
- Incorporated in 1927 with 28 homes; Mostly homes for First Nations women, so they don’t have to go back to their abusers
- They have a conditional offer 18 West Ave, currently owned by Good Sheppard
- Will demolish the house, 16-35 apartments for people in the Aboriginal community. At least two stories; Maximum 5 stories.
- Farr: Demo permit applied for (by Good Sheppard), but there’s no plan for demolition currently

- Stinzine is ready for February issue! Everything came in late, so it’s coming out a bit later than expected, but it’s ready.
